Somerset West, along with neighbouring Gordons Bay and Strand, is situated in the in an area known as the Helderberg Basin. This is a tranquil setting, framed by the lofty Hottentots-Holland and Helderberg mountain ranges to the northeast and the and the deep blue sea of False Bay with its pristine white beaches to the south-west.
Somerset West offers residents a peaceful community feeling in a pristine natural setting with all the advantages of city living. There are a number of nature reserves close by, including the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve with its 1880 fynbos species making it home to the most complex biodiversity on the planet. Leading out of Gordons Bay is one of the world’s most idyllic coastal roads, hugging False Bay all the way to the iconic Hangklip beyond Pringle Bay.
Somerset West is conveniently situated on the N2, 40 minutes from Cape Town and 20 minutes from Cape Town International airport. In the opposite direction, the N2 will lead you up over the scenic Sir Lowry’s Pass toward Elgin and Grabouw and put you on the road to Hermanus.
Somerset West is home to the Erinvale Estate with its Gary Player designed championship golf course as well as the Somerset West Golf Club. Other top-class golf facilities within easy reach are Strand Golf Club, Arabella, De Zalze, Stellenbosch, Pearl Valley and Boschenmeer. For the wine connoisseur, the Helderberg region boasts two of the most prestigious wine estates – Vergelegen and Lourensford, while the historic Stellenbosch Wine Route is only minutes away.
Strand has long stretches of safe and beautiful beaches and also has excellent surf fishing. Gordons Bay while smaller also has magnificent safe, clean beaches.
